The pandemic has exemplified the crucial role information technology plays in healthcare, said execs at the HIMSS21 CIO Summit on Monday.

Panelists at the HIMSS21 Healthcare Cybersecurity Forum on Monday emphasized the importance of getting clinicians and decision-makers on board with safeguarding a health system from bad actors.

Sebastien Villars, senior director of product management at Omnicell, discusses how he predicts automation will have an impact on more streamlined medication management. 

By participating in networks like the one launched to support medical device data surveillance, "health systems can learn from their peers," one clinician explains in advance of his HIMSS21 talk.

"You have to address the people involved in the use of the tool, and more importantly those involved in the processes around medical devices and the tools to monitor and secure them," says one expert in a preview of his HIMSS21 presentation.

"Healthcare IT leaders need to understand the broad range of technologies at use across a hospital and assess which of these systems and machines they would detect attacks against, and where they would be blind."

The health system's manager of information security previews his upcoming HIMSS21 session, discussing the device ecosystem and best practices to defend it.

Although XR tech is often used for games and entertainment, experts say it can be leveraged for creative healthcare solutions too.
