Leaders from Providence, Humana and VMware offered varied perspectives on their artificial intelligence journeys at the HIMSS AI in Healthcare Forum on Friday.

The American Medical Association's principles on the development and deployment of AI highlight members' concerns and consider who should be held liable, says Dr. Jesse Ehrenfeld, president of AMA, speaking from the HIMSS AI in Healthcare Forum.

"AI can fundamentally change the physician experience with an EHR by making it an intelligent partner for the clinician," says Paul Brient, chief product officer of athenahealth.

The two models of MedLM are built on the tech giant's medical LLM Med-PaLM 2, with one designed for complex tasks and the other for scaling across various tasks.  

While privacy regulations are still developing, IQVIA brings humans into artificial intelligence models to think through, trigger and make the go, no-go decisions, says Updesh Dosanjh, practice leader for technology solutions.  

Also, two hospitals under SingHealth have started adopting Lunit's AI chest X-ray solution.

At the HIMSS AI in Healthcare Forum, physician and author Dr. Harvey Castro explored the implications as artificial intelligence expands and increasingly augments clinical decision-making. Providers need to be key players in AI development, he said.

Boston Children’s, CVS, Geisinger, UC San Diego and Wellspan are among the 28 providers and payers promising their AI and machine learning models are geared to ensure healthcare outcomes that are "Fair, Appropriate, Valid, Effective and Safe."

Digital health stakeholders said that AI will be used next year to help ease administrative tasks for providers, improve clinical trial participation and increase transparency in healthcare.  

The agency said the new strategy is critical to achieving its goal of reducing cancer deaths by 50% and improving the burdens of cancer treatments on patients and families.
