ISTANBUL, Turkey - (HealthTech Wire / News) — More than 150 hospitals in Turkey reached Stage 6 of the Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM) in 2017, HIMSS Analytics figures reveal.

This includes 153 public hospitals and one private healthcare facility, the Medipol Mega Hospitals Complex.

The developments are part of the Turkish Ministry of Health’s 2013-2017 strategic plans to increase the quality and effectiveness of service delivery through information and technology and ‘create and disseminate the digital hospital concept in facilities belonging to ministry and ministry-affiliated institutions’.

The Turkish Ministry of Health aims to have all public hospitals assessed against the EMRAM standards by 2019, after signing a five-year Memorandum of Understanding with HIMSS to support implementation of digital.

As of January 2017, HIMSS entered an agreement with Medipol University in Istanbul to prepare hospitals prior to their EMRAM assessments.

In total, 166 hospitals across the country are now at Stage 6 of the EMRAM and, in 2017, Tire Public Hospital in Izmir City was successfully validated at Stage 7 of the standards, becoming the fourth European hospital to attain this achievement.

Ilker Kose, Director of the Technology Transfer Office at the Medipol University in Istanbul, said:

“The main factors behind this quick improvement can be counted as the motivation given by the MoH through public hospitals, and transferring the academic support and health informatics skills to the site by the Medipol University.

“Both are the characteristics of Turkey which can be taken as a tested model for other countries having similar targets.”

In October this year, HIMSS will be organising its fifth event in Istanbul, HIMSS Eurasia’ 18, where representatives from a variety of European and Asian hospitals will be showcasing examples of best practice in the digital space.

Turkish hospitals that have achieved EMRAM Stage 6 will receive at the conference their awards for demonstrating outstanding levels of digitisation and improvements in patient safety.
