Michigan hospital adds EHR to ED system

By Kyle Hardy , Community Editor

Garden City Hospital has upgraded its emergency department system with the addition of an electronic health record.

The Michigan hospital has installed the emergency department EHR from Dallas-based Emergisoft, which provided the hospital with its EmergisoftED system in 2004. The Web-based solution is designed to automate each step of the patient management process in the emergency department and bring the hospital one step closer to the "meaningful use" of IT.

"The upgrade was smooth and successful," said Art Greenlee, the hospital's vice president of operations. "We found Emergisoft to be a great partner in implementation. Their people were here when we needed them and available any time by phone if we had a question. Most people here outside the ED did not even know we were going through a major upgrade. That’s a good sign."

CareTech Solutions, Inc., based in Troy, Mich., assisted with the upgrade in the hospital's ED and has a standing contract with the hospital for support and training assistance. Garden City Hospital and CareTech have worked toigether since the hospital's founding in 2001.

“The upgrade of the Emergisoft application has been a huge success at Garden City Hospital," said Jennifer Heflin, CareTech's applications manager. "The clinicians have embraced the enhancements, which will maximize patient safety and increase productivity. We are looking forward to implementing the future phases of Emergisoft to automate the Emergency Department’s workflow and continue to provide quality patient care.”

Located northwest of Detroit, Garden City Hospital is an independent, 323-bed community hospital with 365 physicians. Their 47 specialties range from emergency medicine to critical care that include radiology, sports medicine, oncology and obstetrics/gynecology.
