InterSystems and Stanley Healthcare announced that they are now working together to develop healthcare applications for the Internet of Things.
The companies intend to tie Stanley’s AeroScout Real-Time Location System with InterSystems clinical information systems to enable new IoT applications, according to Stanley Healthcare vice president Gabi Daniely.
Stanley’s RTLS platform gives hospitals visibility into the status and location of patients, staff and equipment. Integrating RTLS into electronic health records means RTLS can be employed for advanced uses such as patient flow and staff workflow, the companies said, as well as streamlining processes, eliminating dual data entry, and reducing human error through automation.
“A critical piece of the value delivered by our solutions rests on the interoperability with other healthcare information systems,” Daniely said.

Such EHR integration, for instance, enables customers to offer automatic admission, update and discharge of patients in the AeroScout solution, and the assigning of RTLS badges when a patient checks into the clinic.
By boosting location data with EMR-generated demographic and clinical information, and documenting the patient journey – staff assignment, room assignment, planned vs. actual visit times, for example – the AeroScout solution provides context, automates patient flow processes and improves patient experience, staff flow and room utilization analytics, Daniely notes.
“Everyone can appreciate the need for massive, intelligent information flow in hospitals and healthcare – it is literally a matter of life or death,” InterSystems vice president of HealthShare Joe DeSantis said in the statement. “But few people understand just how complicated it is to keep that flow going.”
