Disease management project to help Canadian docs monitor patients

By Molly Merrill , Associate Editor

Two vendors have joined forces to develop technology and services aimed at helping Canadian physicians provide chronic disease management programs to their patients.

The initiative was launched by CA, Inc., an IT management software company based in Islandia, N.Y., and Healthscreen Solutions Inc., an Ontario based EMR software provider.

The project aims at developing CA's technology to record and monitor a patient's health data on a real-time basis, allowing for more precise tracking and trending of the impact of behaviors such as diet and activities that affect chronic conditions.

In the first phase of the initiative, the companies have agreed to focus on developing a service aimed at managing health information for individuals with diabetes.

"IT plays a critical role in supporting the efforts of governments and organizations around the world as they work to adopt more efficient means of delivering better healthcare while controlling costs," said Chris Stakutis, vice president of emerging technologies at CA. "We look forward to working with Healthscreen to develop and offer these unique services to healthcare organizations and patients. By combining CA technologies and Healthscreen industry expertise we hope to help physicians and patients better manage and care for chronic diseases such as diabetes."

Healthscreen will leverage its distribution network of more 8,000 Canadian physicians and 7 million Canadian patients to implement these services.

Under the terms of the agreement, CA will work exclusively with Healthscreen in Canada.

"We have always believed in the opportunity that exists for Healthscreen to leverage its expansive national network of Canadian doctors, to introduce new, innovative services that are aimed at improving patient care," said Justin Belobaba, president and CEO of Healthscreen. "This is a watershed moment in Healthscreen's history, as we partner with a global IT company, who has the resources and the capability to develop and help Healthscreen to deploy groundbreaking chronic disease management services to doctors and patients."
