Where, oh where, is the Department of Veterans Affairs Chief Information Security Officer Brian Burns headed?

Burns submitted his resignation to VA CIO LaVerne Council at the end of May. According to Meritalk, the news outlet that first reported the shuffle, his official last day on the job is June 10.

Meritalk reported Burns plans to stay in public service and would be joining another agency, but did not reveal where or what post he might fill.

You might call Burns a federal government insider.

He has held senior IT positions at several federal agencies: Defense, Education, Health and Human Services, Interior and Treasury.

According to a short biography on the Government Information Technology executive Council website, Burns entered federal civil service in 1997 as a member of the Senior Executive Service with more than 13 years of commercial information management, technology and product development experience.

He served in multiple information management, technology and cyberspace executive positions within the Departments of Defense, Air Force, Navy; Education; Interior; Health and Human Services; and Treasury Internal Revenue Service.

What’s next? Some Washington insiders speculate Burns might be named the country’s first Federal CISO.

Stay tuned.
