Sponsored: A rising health-tech powerhouse

By Konica Minolta

Joe Cisna, MBA, MHA, CHP, National Healthcare Market Manager, Solutions for Konica Minolta Business Solutions, USA, discusses how Konica Minolta can deliver significant value to the health-tech segment beyond what most in the industry probably knows about the company today. Cisna, who guides the healthcare strategy for Konica Minolta Business Solutions, has 18 years of healthcare provider and payer sales and marketing experience in electronic health records (EHRs) and medical cost containment services.

In this Q&A, he highlights how Konica Minolta is positioned to help solve today’s healthcare challenges and what it plans to bring to health tech in the coming years.

Who exactly is Konica Minolta?

Konica Minolta is a multi-billion global manufacturing and technology company providing a variety of automation products and solutions, diagnostic imaging equipment and healthcare IT, as well as optic sensing technology to a wide range of industries. All of our business units leverage technology developed through more than a hundred years of experience in the photographic and camera industry, which we sold several years ago but use as a foundation for our technology innovation.

How exactly does Konica Minolta play in healthcare?

We have served the healthcare industry for decades through our diagnostic-imaging business, as well as through our office-automation technology division, which primarily delivers print/copy/scan capability and print management. We have broadened the scope of the solutions we offer considerably with the new Exa Platform, including PACS, EHR and RIS, as well as through several business offerings that work to automate everything from document scan and capture to enterprise content management. We have grown our healthcare business substantially over the past 5-plus years. I think we’re a growing force that is becoming recognized, significantly, in the market. There is a significant effort underway, on a global scale, to build out a world-class healthcare IT organization that will be a true player and a force to be reckoned with in the industry. We’re very excited about the future, and we believe that Konica Minolta will become a recognized brand in healthcare.

You mentioned security and services. Can you tell me more about that?

We’re especially proud of our security and compliance platform. We have developed implementation standards for deploying our multifunctional printers that are unmatched in our industry and guard against PHI (protected health information) breaches on office products sitting in virtually every type and size of healthcare provider organization – we refer to that service as bizhub Secure Healthcare. We have also introduced a HIPAA Consulting practice to our customers providing risk assessments required under HIPAA and HITECH, as well as HIPAA certification training through our close partnership with ecfirst AKA HIPAA Academy. Our medical-imaging division offers HIPAA-compliant, cloud-based back-up and collaboration tools providing highly secure diagnostic image management. All of this, as well as the technology we use for access control and authentication, provide a strong security value prop to our customers.

Another very exciting area for us is our business Innovation Center in Silicon Valley. We opened that about two years ago to guide us in our e‑ orts to innovate with horizon technologies. Our first major investment has been the healthcare industry, and we have assembled a prominent council of industry thought leaders who are meeting on a semi-annual basis to help us build out a technology platform that we can introduce to the healthcare industry in the years to come.
