Wireless communication device maker Spectralink will debut its second generation of its Pivot product at HIMSS16, officials said on Tuesday.
Originally designed for use by caregivers in inpatient clinical settings, Spectralink said the second iteration brings upgrades designed to make the device more usable, including a new optional camera, the latest version of Google’s Android operating system, a configuration management system to simplify controlling and provisioning the Pivot handsets, as well as additional charging and new carrying options for linking a holster and belt clip as well as a spring-loaded clip that attaches to lab coat pockets.

Hospitals have been using the Pivot Android rugged device for applications such as secure texting and the mobilization of electronic health records, said Ben Guderian, senior director of product management at Spectralink.
That includes including Epic’s Rover and Cerner’s CareAware Connect.
“Mobile communication has become mission-critical in healthcare,” Guderian said. “A lot of clinical workflows have been built around the expectation that caregivers have a mobile communication device with them at all times. What really has shifted is the need for secure messaging from nurses to physicians, shifting from real-time communication to asynchronous messaging, essentially text messaging.”
