Ricoh is a well-known name when it comes hardware such as copiers and printers but it also a company evolving toward communication, collaboration and coordination of healthcare data.

"Over the past several years, we have transitioned from being a traditional hardware company – so you'll see very little hardware," said Ron Nielson, vice president of services sales strategy at Ricoh. Instead, at HIMSS18 Ricoh will be "demonstrating the life of information as it moves through the continuum of care. From intake all the way through discharge, with all the different areas between that information has to connect.”

Ricoh's health software focus is on three main areas. First is connected care, such as scanning technologies to help digitize paper patient records and business documents and an order management platform to automate pharmacy, lab and radiology orders. Second, there's administrative efficiency, with tools such as an enterprise content management system to help transition from paper-based digital workflows. Third, there's security and data governance to help protect the electronic health records and help with HIPAA compliance.

"You can pull up patient information, annotate, collaborate and then move that information back into the patient health record," Nielson said. "At HIMSS18, we will be showing all the areas where we can empower a healthcare workplace."

Some of the hardware that will be on display at the Ricoh booth is its digital whiteboards, said Nielson, which can help with engaging hands-on collaboration.

"Those interactive whiteboards are great collaborative tools," he said. "You can pull up patient information, annotate, collaborate and then move that information back into the patient health record."

Ricoh is also a platinum sponsor of the Intelligent Health Pavilion at HIMSS18 (Booth #11657), and one of its newest executives will be offering an educational presentation there: John Brindley, vice president of healthcare strategy at Ricoh USA, who joined the company in October 2017 following a career that has taken him to leading hospitals and health systems such as MedStar Health, Inova Fairfax, Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center and Ascension.

"As we transition from a traditional hardware company to one that's really focused on driving solutions in this complex world, we thought it was important to bring in people with real-world experience to help us drive our strategy," said Neilson.

Brindley be be doing a presentation at the Intelligent Healthcare Pavilion – Tuesday, March 6 at 2:30 p.m. – focused on how interoperability, most notably the movement of information between systems and people.

"Information is really all about patient care and how it's connected together," said Brindley. "We can improve those handoffs to make sure things don't get dropped, and we can improve its predictability."

Ricoh will be in Booth 7321.
