The power of the network

“All networks are not created equal."

When attendees hit the HIMSS15 show floor, they will be dazzled by technologies with the potential to improve care and health outcomes and lower costs. But many of these technologies depend on connectivity. Without a secure, fast, and reliable network, these products will fail to meet their full potential. As one of the largest communication technology companies in the world, Verizon can deliver on technology’s promise.

“All networks are not created equal,” said Shawn Hakl, vice president of product and new business innovation supporting Verizon’s IP network platforms and managed services.

In today’s environment, Hakl said, it is expected, and even required, “that everyone, virtually everywhere, and via any device will be able to seamlessly and securely communicate.” To achieve this standard, healthcare organizations are teaming with communication technology companies like Verizon.

Verizon owns one of largest IP networks in the world, Hakl said. Verizon’s network supports tens of thousands of businesses and government agencies around the globe, including 94 percent of the Fortune 500 and links 150 countries on six continents, enabling the company to deliver global network capabilities with a range of access choices.

“From simple monitoring and notification to co-management and full outsourcing options, we can evaluate and incorporate new technologies designed to lessen IT burden and help control costs,” he said.

Verizon manages some of the largest and most complex networks in the world. Its depth of experience means the company is highly suited to meet the healthcare industry’s unique needs. “From providing HIPAA enabled data centers to telehealth services, Verizon offers a range of solutions backed by an experienced team that knows the healthcare industry,” said Hakl. “We help our clients develop solutions that address their business needs.”

That includes solutions such as making information security and compliance easier for healthcare organizations. “Our solutions can help customers secure their Protected Health Information (PHI) and address key security standards and regulations,” he said. “We can enable healthcare organizations with resilient IT solutions and infrastructure to support the secure exchange of protected health information, so patient information can be accessed when required from virtually anywhere, anytime.”

With the constant threat of breaches and attacks, the healthcare industry is under immense pressure. Verizon understands how important network security is to healthcare organizations.

“Our experienced operations and technology employees monitor and maintain our global IP network and manage more than 4,000 customer networks across the globe,” said Hakl, and for added reliability, redundancy and diversity are built into the network.

The company keeps up-to-date about what is happening in the threat landscape and has become a thought leader in the field of security. Every year, for instance, it publishes the Data Breach Investigations Report and the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Compliance Report. Both publications shed light on the challenges of the threat landscape and the potential solutions needed to help prevent security incidents.

Healthcare organizations can feel confident that by working with Verizon, their networks and data are in good hands.
