New Jersey hospital goes for hosted EMR at third hospital

By Bernie Monegain

The Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Rahway, a 265-bed community hospital in Rahway, N.J., has rolled out a new electronic medical system. Hospital executives say the technology is critical to the clinicians' goal of integrating patient care.

The hospital tapped Atlanta-based Eclipsys for its Sunrise Acute Care EMR technology. The on-time, on-budget activation marks the third hospital in the Robert Wood Johnson Health System to adopt Eclipsys clinical solutions.

"The activation of Sunrise Acute Care marks an important step in our strategy to integrate patient care onto a single platform and streamline clinical workflows throughout the hospital," said Kirk C. Tice, RWJUH Rahway's CEO.

Tice said this first phase of the deployment was completed on time and without disruption of patient care.

By replacing disparate systems with an enterprise-wide system, physicians, nurses and other RWJUH Rahway care providers have access to up-to-date patient EMRs, offering unified views of clinical data such as care plans, assessments and structured notes, Tice said.  The single view helps them better coordinate and communicate as a care team, he said, and the functionality tightens the link between what a physician orders to what the nurses and other care providers administer.

Eclipsys will remotely host and deliver the solution from its ISO 9001:2000-certified Technology Solutions Center in Mountain Lakes, N.J.

Eclipsys Remote Hosting services provide RWJUH Rahway with a high level of confidence and predictability, said Matt Sappern, Eclipsys' senior vice president of professional services. Moreover, he said, it frees up floor space and resources for other healthcare operations.

More than 4,000 physicians and clinicians are using Eclipsys technology at the 600-bed academic medical center at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, N.J., and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton in Hamilton, N.J.
