By Diana Manos , Contributing writer

The federal advisory HIT Standards Committee will meet Thursday in Washington from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Leaders from the Office of the National Coordinator are slated to give updates on the progress of the panel. Jonathan Perlin, chairman, and John Halamka, vice chairman, respectively, of the HIT Standards Committee are also on the agenda to give updates. Leaders the Clinical Quality Workgroup and Privacy and Security Workgroup are also expected to provide reports on their progress.

The HIT Standards Committee was mandated by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, passed in February. The group – made up of experts and stakeholders from the private and public sector – is charged with advising the federal government on the kinds of standards providers will need for data collection and exchange under ARRA to receive Medicare bonuses for the meaningful use of healthcare IT.
