Healthcare IT professionals need few reminders about the importance of keeping cyber-security defenses strong. Most are well aware that personal health records are considered to be one of the most highly prized types of data by hackers since they can contain information that can be useful in identity theft.
So a visit to the Cybersecurity Command Center should be a priority for anyone whose job description involves information security. The center will have kiosks that are open throughout the time when the exhibit hall is open, with demonstrations from security providers. And it will be hosting a steady stream of educational sessions in the on-site theater.
One issue that security professionals often need to address is convincing budget managers of the need to fund security operations. Help should be found in the presentation, “Scoping the full cost of a cyber attack,” which John Gelinne of Deloitte and Touche will give on Wednesday at 1:00 pm. HIPAA fines have run over $1 million for some hospitals but they are just one of the many cost factors an enterprise faces after a cyber attack.

When most people think of security, firewalls and data encryption are top of mind. But for hospital security, medical devices also need serious consideration. On Thursday, Gavin O’Brien from National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), will provide insight into the lurking security issues in these common tools, in the presentation, “Wireless Infusion Pumps: Securing Hospitals’ Most Ubiquitous Medical Device.” It will start at 11:30 a.m.
And, looking at the big picture, David Houlding, Healthcare Privacy & Security Lead Solutions Architect, will present “Healthcare Breaches: How Mature is Your Security Posture?” in which he will describe how to implement a healthcare “breach security maturity model” which can quickly assess an enterprise’s posture, and identify steps needed to improve using a an incremental, layered approach. This session will take place on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
The Cybersecurity Command Center is in Exhibit Hall G, Booth 9908.
