HIMSS, AMDIS name Colin Banas as 2018 Physician Executive Leader of the Year

The Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center CMIO earned the award by applying IT at the point of care to optimize engagements and improve outcomes, the associations said.

HIMSS and AMDIS on Wednesday awarded Colin Banas, MD, the 2018 Physician Executive Leader of the Year.

Banas is the Chief Medical Information Officer at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center, where he also spearheads the Office of Clinical Transformation, which aims to apply IT at the point of care. Successful examples include: real-time dashboards for the system’s Early Warning System, clinical decision support tools and what HIMSS and AMDIS described as “intuitive usability designs.”

In 2014, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT named Banas as a Health IT fellow. He is also a member of the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives, American College of Physician Executives, American Medical Informatics Association, as well as HIMSS and AMDIS.

“Colin has gone above and beyond the call of duty in his demonstration of effective physician executive leadership through optimized health engagements and improved care outcomes,” said Patricia Wise, Vice President of Healthcare Information Systems at HIMSS North America. “His passion for education has been a catalyst for promoting innovation and thought leadership in his various roles, and HIMSS recognizes the immense value he provides as a leader in the healthcare community.”

The associations also pointed to his “impeccable standards and physician leadership regardless of the everyday chaos within a hospital setting,” as well as his contribution to AMDIS educational, regulatory and policy programs.

“His knowledge, experience and energy have helped educate hundreds of informaticists for many years,” said Rich Rydell, CEO of AMDIS, and Howard Landa, MD, Vice Chair of the AMIDS Advisory Board.

At HIMSS18, Banas will be honored with the 2018 Physician Executive Leader of the Year award during the awards gala on March 8 at the Wynn Hotel.
