Chuck Kesler, chief information security officer at Duke Health, and Mac McMillan, CEO and cofounder of healthcare IT security consulting firm CynergisTek, share similar philosophies on healthcare data security.

At HIMSS16, they are teaming up for a presentation geared to helping healthcare organizations that are working to get their arms around data security issues, take the next steps.

They will discuss emerging trends in healthcare data security, as well as emerging threats. They will review the top dangers posed today as well as strategies for tackling risks.

“Most every organization is struggling to determine how to address the evolving threats everybody’s faced with, and how to balance ultimately what are security controls that can make it harder for providers to get their work done against securing the information,” said Kesler.

“In implementing any security program, we don’t want to do things in a way that disables our ability to take good care of patients, but at the same time we have to do things that protect the information that keep the attackers at bay.”

“We do want to leave folks with an idea of how they can get started – maybe take away some of that analysis paralysis that I think organizations are up against,” Kesler said. “You have to accept that you’re not going to solve those problems overnight. But you have to take the first steps and get the program moving in the right direction.”

The session “Best Practices for Protecting Against Cyberattacks” is set for March 3, 11:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. at the Sands Expo Convention Center Rock of Ages Theater.
