Congressional committee hones in on interoperability, security

Health IT leaders are slated to testify before Congress Thursday regarding interoperability and security standards for electronic health records.

The House Committee on Science and Technology, Subcommittee on Technology and Innovation has scheduled the hearing "Standards for Health IT: Meaningful Use and Beyond" for 10 a.m. Rep. David Wu (D-Ore.) is chairman.

Testifying will be:

  • David Blumenthal, MD, national coordinator for healthcare information technology;
  • Dick Gibson, MD, president, Oregon Health Network;
  • Deven McGraw, director of the Health Privacy Project, Center for Democracy and Technology;
  • Kathleen M. Roberts, Associate Director for Federal and Industrial Relations, Information Technology Laboratory, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST);
  • Joyce Sensmeier, a nurse who serves as HIMSS vice president for informatics.

The hearing will be webcast live, and testimony will be posted on the subcommittee website.
