The new Blue Cross Blue Shield Axis now compiles detailed data on more than 2.3 billion procedures from all 36 independent Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies, representing some $350 billion in annual claims. The aim? Better outcomes at lower cost.
The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association says its size and depth are unlike anything that's been tried before – housing data on procedures conducted at more than 20,000 healthcare facilities by some 540,000 physicians.
"The depth, breadth and scope of the data in BCBS Axis are unprecedented," said BCBSA President and CEO Scott Serota in a press statement. "Through our actionable data, and the speed at which it is available, we are leading a transformation of the healthcare system to improve the quality and affordability of care."
Officials say the new repository "vastly expands" the volume and variety of data included in BCBS Axis, which is now billed as the largest pool of aggregated data and the only one that includes patient information from every ZIP code in the U.S.
In giving employers, consumers and physicians more "accurate and actionable" data on physicians, provider organizations and procedures, BCBS Axis aims to better benchmark care delivery patterns and spur more coordinated, patient-centered care, officials say.
