Artificial intelligence alone is not the answer, says Charles Worthington of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Connecting AI-enabled insights like risk scoring to a larger healthcare program is what helps move the needle on outcomes.

Lurie Children's Hospital CAIO Rajiv Kolagani says managing artificial intelligence is both an art and a science – and requires buy-in from everyone. He points to one recent win among several: an AI-powered system that reduces chart review from days to minutes.

Empowering patients with a broader and more inclusive view of what's possible can lead to more personalized care, says one CEO. Failing to do so means AI will always fall short of its true potential to support better outcomes.

"These are real lives, potentially extended or saved because an AI system surfaced the right data at the right time, and our teams were equipped to act on it," says the health system's COO. And the tech has helped boost the case closure rate by 50%.

"By making it faster and easier to use the most up-to-date guidelines at the point of care, we anticipate a more consistent application of best practices, which can contribute to improved patient trajectories," says the hospital's CMIO.

Dr. Justin Norden, CEO of a generative AI infrastructure company, warns hospitals and health systems to identify ROI, safety issues, risk, governance and long-term value when approaching AI systems and tools.

Dr. Sipra Laddha, a physician expert in women's health and virtual care, says telehealth and AI can work in tandem to help women – and all patients – who need mental healthcare, even in a time of limited access.

They see artificial intelligence as a core enabler of financial performance and patient-centric care, a new survey shows, and also expect it to become fundamental to how health systems think about care quality, patient outcomes and market competitiveness.

The Indiana health system has seen an 86% drop in time to complete notes, with after-hours documentation time plunging by 34%. And documentation turnaround has improved by 87%. Says one provider: "I was sold after just one patient. It was such a relief."
